Overview

About This Trail

The Transept Trail is currently CLOSED due to Dragon Bravo Wildfire damage, except where it passes through North Rim Campground. This moderate connector spans 2 miles one-way and links Grand Canyon Lodge to the Backcountry Info Center and northern Bridle Path. When conditions allow, it winds along the canyon rim above The Transept, a dramatic side canyon with steeper wooded sections and open rim vistas. Mule deer and other wildlife frequent this area, but hikers must plan carefully—limited services and no potable water on the North Rim.

Moderate

Trail Highlights

Dramatic Transept side canyon views from the rim. Connection between lodge and backcountry access points. Wildlife viewing (mule deer and other animals).

Insider Tips

• Check FIRST at Backcountry Info Center—closure status varies • Fill every container at the lodge before leaving • The Transept vista at Mile 0.5 is the payoff; don't skip it • Trail markers may be obscured by debris—stay alert • North Rim is fundamentally different from South Rim—come prepared for isolation

Best Season to Hike

Mid-May to mid-October (North Rim access window only)

Hiking Tips

  • NO POTABLE WATER ON NORTH RIM—carry minimum 2 liters from lodge
  • Trail is CLOSED except within North Rim Campground section
  • Tight boots on steep wooded sections
  • Mule deer present—stay alert
  • North Rim completely closed mid-October to mid-May
  • Fire damage means loose rock and unstable debris
  • Bring headlamp; forest sections can be dark

Family Info

Not recommended for families with young children. Steep drop-offs require hand-holding. No water, no restrooms on trail. Remote location with slow emergency response. Older children (10+) with hiking experience and adult supervision only.

What Hikers Say

Hikers who reach this trail find dramatic Transept canyon views—but the 2026 season is complicated by access and wildfire cleanup. Most report difficulty with limited water and remote conditions. This is grit country for experienced hikers only.
