TrailMesa Arch
0.6-mile loop, 56 ft gain; sun-exposed, crowd-heavy sunrise.

Syncline Loop is the most challenging trail in Island in the Sky—a strenuous 8.1-mile scramble through boulder fields and canyon switchbacks with 1,516 feet of elevation change. Most park rescues in Canyonlands occur on this trail. Expect steep exposure, loose rock, few trail markers, and miles of loose sand. This is a grit-check for experienced desert hikers only.
Strenuous
Technical scrambling around Upheaval Dome with dramatic canyon views and a challenging grit test.
• The false summit at mile 4 will tempt you—keep going for real loop completion. • Hike clockwise; the initial steep descent is tougher than the gradual sand ascent. • The boulder field between miles 3-5 requires problem-solving—no 'right' way through. Stay calm. • Bring a headlamp even on day hikes; you may need it if slower than expected. • Trail does NOT provide views of Upheaval Dome itself—don't expect that payoff.
Spring (March-May) and fall (September-October)
Not recommended for young children or inexperienced hikers. Technical scrambling and exposure require adult supervision and prior hiking experience. Hand-holding mandatory near canyon drop-offs.
Hikers universally report this as Canyonlands' toughest day hike. The combination of scrambling, exposure, sparse markers, and dehydration risk demands respect. Experienced desert hikers praise the technical challenge and solitude; rescues are common among the underprepared.

Steep scrambling with canyon exposure near edges. Boulder fields with few trail markers require careful foot placement. Loose sand makes descent treacherous. Severe dehydration risk in summer heat—most park rescues occur on this trail. Winter snow/ice on high sections significantly increase hazard.
Not wheelchair accessible. Rough, uneven terrain with rocky hills and stone steps. Requires scrambling through boulder fields. Winter may include snow/ice; traction devices recommended.

Yes. It's the most challenging in Island in the Sky, and most park rescues occur here. Hazards include scrambling with exposure, boulder navigation, loose rock, and severe dehydration risk. It's not a cliff-edge collapse, but it demands respect and preparation.
Not recommended. Start with Mesa Arch Trail or Upheaval Dome Overlooks Trail first. Syncline requires experience reading terrain, managing water, and handling exposure. Overconfidence causes rescues.
At least 1 liter per person per hour. For a 5-7 hour hike in summer, bring 5-7 liters minimum. No water sources exist on the trail. Running dry on this terrain is dangerous.
Only with microspikes or crampons and winter hiking experience. Snow/ice make scrambling and exposure significantly more hazardous. Check conditions at the visitor center before attempting.
Not ideal. Hiking with a partner is safer—you have backup if someone gets injured or dehydrated. Cell service is unreliable. Always tell someone where you're going and when you'll return.
Clockwise is recommended. The initial steep descent is punishing but gets it out of the way early. You then have better afternoon shade for the gradual ascent through sand sections.
No. This trail loops around Upheaval Dome but does not provide views of the feature itself. For views, hike the Upheaval Dome Overlooks Trail in the Moderate - Mesa Top section instead.
