Trail Highlights

Lake Michigan shoreline with excellent bird-watching opportunities, especially during spring and summer migration. Winter shelf ice formations and seasonal vegetation changes highlight the dune restoration effort. The boardwalk section along Burns Waterway offers the most scenic views and wildlife watching.

Insider Tips

• Start at the pavilion and head south on the east side of the traffic circle for the most scenic route. • The boardwalk section along Burns Waterway is the highlight—go slow and watch for birds. • Visit early morning (6-7 AM) for best bird watching and fewer crowds. • The road crossing halfway feels like the end, but the stairs descend to the best boardwalk views. • In winter, look for shelf ice formations along the beach edge, especially after cold nights. • Bring tick repellent even in cooler months; ticks don't hibernate here.

Best Season to Hike

Spring through fall for comfortable weather and bird watching. Winter is open but weather-dependent; worth visiting for shelf ice formations along the beach edge.

Hiking Tips

  • Use DEET-based tick repellent and wear light-colored clothing to spot ticks.
  • Check yourself thoroughly after the hike.
  • Bring at least 2L of water and sunscreen.
  • Tighten your boots on the boardwalk—it can be slippery when wet.
  • Dress in layers; lake wind can cool you quickly.
  • Stay on marked trail; poison ivy edges the path.
  • Bring binoculars for bird watching in spring/summer.

Family Info

Very family-friendly. Easy, short loop suitable for young children and strollers on paved sections. Stairs at the southern end require adult supervision, but the pavilion area and first half of the loop are stroller-accessible. No steep drop-offs, but stay on trail near water edges. Plenty of benches for rest breaks.

What Hikers Say

Hikers appreciate this easy, accessible loop as a perfect introduction to Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan shoreline. Bird watching in spring/summer is exceptional, and seasonal changes (shelf ice in winter, fall colors) offer year-round appeal. Ticks and changing weather require preparation, but the paved trail and short distance make it manageable for families and less-experienced hikers.
