TrailExplore Raspberry Island
Bog boardwalk grit test: steady footing, slippery planks, insect-eating plants. One mile of tactical observation.
Rock Harbor (East End of Isle Royale) • Isle Royale National Park
This 4.2-mile section of the Harbor to Hills Trail connects Three Mile Campground to Daisy Farm along the Rock Harbor shoreline. Expect relentless ups and downs over rocky, rooty terrain—18 inches wide in places with overgrown brush pressing in. You'll see Rock Harbor Lighthouse, Edisen Fishery historic buildings, and Mott Island (NPS headquarters) across the water. Water taxi access is mandatory; reserve in advance with Rock Harbor Lodge.
Moderate-Strenuous
Historic lighthouse views, working fishery site, and water-level hiking along Rock Harbor Channel. Mott Island (NPS headquarters) is visible across the water. Daisy Farm Campground—one of the island's largest—sits right on the rocky shore.
• The ascent pace is deceptive—4.2 miles takes longer than lowland terrain. Don't underestimate time. • The best views (lighthouse, Edisen fishery) come in the final 1.5 miles to Daisy Farm. • Daisy Farm has intermittently staffed ranger station; stop there for emergency help or resupply advice. • Overgrown sections are passable but slow progress. Gaiters prevent brush cuts. • Water taxi schedules are tight. Arrive trailhead 30 minutes before departure; missed taxi = overnight camp. • Reverse this section (Daisy Farm to Three Mile) if you prefer descending technical terrain while fresh.
Summer (June–August). Spring (May) and Fall (September) available but water taxi schedules narrow.
Not family-friendly for young children. Teens 14+ with hiking experience and strong ankles may attempt it. Narrow trail with steep sections and rocky terrain—hand-holding is not practical on narrow sections. Water taxi logistics require schedule flexibility.
Hikers praise the lighthouse views and remote shoreline experience, but warn the rocky terrain and overgrown vegetation slow pace significantly. Most complete it in 4–5 hours. Those with weak ankles or worn boots report pain; technical footing is not optional.
Water taxi from Rock Harbor Lodge to Three Mile Trailhead (departure point). Advance reservations required through Rock Harbor Lodge. Return via water taxi from Daisy Farm Campground to Rock Harbor Lodge. Rock Harbor Lodge operates May–September only. Check their website or call ahead for taxi schedule and booking.
Trail is 18 inches wide in places, covered in rocks and roots with overgrown vegetation. Many ups and downs over slippery rocky surfaces—the descent tests ankle support and boot quality. Narrow trail sections have unforgiving edges. Lake Superior weather can shift rapidly. Bears inhabit Isle Royale (100-yard safe distance required). No cell service exists on island.

It's Moderate-Strenuous, not mountaineering. But it demands strong ankles, good boots, and technical footing on rocky terrain. Beginners who can hike 5+ miles on elevation will struggle; experienced hikers typically complete it in 4–5 hours. Your ankles will tell you if you're ready.
No reliable water sources documented on the trail. Carry minimum 2L per person. Lake Superior water requires treatment and is cold. Plan to refill at Three Mile or Daisy Farm campgrounds.
No permit required for day hiking. You DO need to reserve your water taxi in advance through Rock Harbor Lodge. Taxis operate May–September only. Without a reservation, you can't reach the trailhead.
Yes, bears inhabit Isle Royale (100-yard safe distance required). Solo hiking is allowed but not recommended. Make noise constantly; travel in groups when possible. Rangers staff Daisy Farm intermittently for emergencies.
Lake Superior weather can shift fast. If caught in a storm, seek shelter at Daisy Farm Campground (about 4 miles). Rangers are sometimes there. Turn back early rather than risk exposure on exposed sections. No cell service exists; a satellite communicator or PLB is your lifeline.
Good boots (not trail runners), gaiters, trekking poles, 2L+ water, bug spray, head net, rain jacket, satellite communicator or PLB, map, compass. The rocks and roots are ankle-breakers; marginal gear will hurt.
Moderate. Isle Royale is remote, but this Harbor to Hills section is a popular multi-day route connector. Expect other hikers June–August, especially weekends. May and September are quieter.
