Overview

About This Trail

This 4.2-mile section of the Harbor to Hills Trail connects Three Mile Campground to Daisy Farm along the Rock Harbor shoreline. Expect relentless ups and downs over rocky, rooty terrain—18 inches wide in places with overgrown brush pressing in. You'll see Rock Harbor Lighthouse, Edisen Fishery historic buildings, and Mott Island (NPS headquarters) across the water. Water taxi access is mandatory; reserve in advance with Rock Harbor Lodge.

Difficulty Level

Moderate-Strenuous

Trail Highlights

Historic lighthouse views, working fishery site, and water-level hiking along Rock Harbor Channel. Mott Island (NPS headquarters) is visible across the water. Daisy Farm Campground—one of the island's largest—sits right on the rocky shore.

Insider Tips

• The ascent pace is deceptive—4.2 miles takes longer than lowland terrain. Don't underestimate time. • The best views (lighthouse, Edisen fishery) come in the final 1.5 miles to Daisy Farm. • Daisy Farm has intermittently staffed ranger station; stop there for emergency help or resupply advice. • Overgrown sections are passable but slow progress. Gaiters prevent brush cuts. • Water taxi schedules are tight. Arrive trailhead 30 minutes before departure; missed taxi = overnight camp. • Reverse this section (Daisy Farm to Three Mile) if you prefer descending technical terrain while fresh.

Best Season to Hike

Summer (June–August). Spring (May) and Fall (September) available but water taxi schedules narrow.

Hiking Tips

  • Carry 2L water minimum—no documented water sources on trail; Lake Superior water requires treatment
  • Gaiters or tall socks mandatory—rocks and roots find bare ankles fast
  • Trekking poles for technical footing on slippery surfaces; they save your ankles on descent
  • Inspect boots beforehand; worn tread on rocks is how people go down
  • Make noise constantly for bears; travel in groups if possible
  • Bring satellite communicator or PLB—no cell service on island
  • Waterproof bag for essentials; Lake Superior weather changes fast
  • Arrive at taxi 30 minutes early; missing the boat means overnight camp

Family Info

Not family-friendly for young children. Teens 14+ with hiking experience and strong ankles may attempt it. Narrow trail with steep sections and rocky terrain—hand-holding is not practical on narrow sections. Water taxi logistics require schedule flexibility.

What Hikers Say

Hikers praise the lighthouse views and remote shoreline experience, but warn the rocky terrain and overgrown vegetation slow pace significantly. Most complete it in 4–5 hours. Those with weak ankles or worn boots report pain; technical footing is not optional.
