TrailChihuahuan Desert Nature Trail
Desert botany run. 0.7 miles, 30 minutes, mountain views—no sweat required.

Two self-guided cavern explorations: Big Room (North America's largest cave chamber, flat, scenic formations) and Natural Entrance (750-foot descent via historic explorer route). Big Room suits most fitness levels with elevator access; Natural Entrance is a serious vertical challenge. Both deliver world-class underground formations, accessible via timed-entry reservations required.
Easy to moderate (Big Room via elevator); strenuous (Natural Entrance trail entry)
Big Room is the largest cave chamber in North America by volume, decorated with dramatic cave formations, a working historic rope ladder from 1924 explorer expeditions, and named geological formations (Devil's Spring, Whale's Mouth, Iceberg Rock). Natural Entrance offers the earned experience—750 feet of vertical descent equivalent to descending a 75-story building, then emergence into the underground cathedral.
• Take the elevator down for most accessible Big Room experience • Natural Entrance is the extreme descent—750 feet down a near-vertical grade • Big Room shortcut (0.6 mi, 45 min) perfect for time-limited visits • Bring light jacket always; 50°F feels cold after exertion • Book recreation.gov in advance; summer entry slots vanish by late May • The 1924 rope ladder in Big Room is a working historical artifact—not roped off, used by early explorers • Last entry 2:15 PM is a hard deadline; arriving after 2:00 PM risks ticket unavailability • Grip-soled footwear is non-negotiable; slippery cave floor has no mercy
Year-round. Cavern interior maintains 50°F year-round regardless of external season.
Big Room is moderately family-friendly with flat terrain and elevator access. Children free (ages 15 and under). Mandatory arm's-length supervision—children must stay within one arm's-length of parents at all times, no exceptions. Natural Entrance is NOT family-friendly: 750-foot descent, exposed terrain, and extreme physical demand; not recommended for children under 12.
Hikers divide sharply: Big Room visitors praise it as accessible, world-class cave exploration with minimal effort and maximum scenic reward. Natural Entrance aficionados embrace the 750-foot vertical gauntlet as earned descent. Both routes converge in North America's largest cave chamber, ringed with formations that justify the National Park designation.
Online reservations required at https://www.recreation.gov/ticket/234637/ticket/10086811 or call 877-444-6777. Reservation locks entry time only; entrance tickets purchased at visitor center ticket counter.
Elevator access available to Big Room (included with admission). No shuttle service; parking at visitor center area.
Natural Entrance Trail is extremely steep: 750-foot elevation loss over 1.25 miles (~45-degree grade), equivalent to descending a 75-story building. Cave floors throughout are slippery, especially after rain or moisture exposure. Children ages 0-15 must remain within one arm's-length of parent/guardian at all times; no exceptions on steep sections or near edges. Natural Entrance NOT recommended for those with heart conditions, respiratory conditions, or limited mobility—the sustained vertical grade is punishing on ascent.
A portion of Big Room Trail is wheelchair accessible via elevator entrance. Natural Entrance Trail is NOT wheelchair accessible; steep grade and loose terrain make it unsafe for mobility devices.

Big Room via elevator? Absolutely. It's a flat 1.25-mile walk in a 50°F cavern. Natural Entrance? Only if you're fit and accept extreme vertical—750 feet down a staircase equivalent with no shortcuts.
Big Room is lit with guide lighting and well-ventilated; claustrophobia is manageable for most. Natural Entrance is more open (paradoxically less claustrophobic) but far steeper and more exposed—a different kind of scary.
Big Room full walk: 1.5 hours. Big Room shortcut: 45 minutes. Natural Entrance descent + Big Room: 2+ hours. Add 30 minutes at visitor center for ticket purchase and orientation.
Big Room is good for ages 6+. Children free (under 16) but must stay within arm's-length of parents—no exceptions. Natural Entrance is a no-go for kids under 12; too steep, too exposed, too demanding.
Wear sturdy, grip-soled shoes—the cave floor is slippery. Bring a light jacket (50°F). Carry 1-2 liters of water. Headlamp helps if exploring unlit sections. Trekking poles essential for Natural Entrance descent.
Big Room via elevator is safe solo. Natural Entrance is riskier solo—steep, exposed, and you're fully responsible if you slip. Tell someone where you're going and when you'll return.
Yes. Online reservations (recreation.gov or 877-444-6777) are required and lock in your entry time. Timed entry ensures controlled flow and protects cave formations. Book in advance—summer slots fill up fast.
