Overview

About This Trail

Druid Arch Trail punches above its 10.8-mile distance—the final 1.25 miles assault a steep scramble with a ladder climb and loose rock that demands fitness and nerve. You'll hike sandy canyon bottoms for hours before the payoff: one of The Needles' most spectacular rock formations. Only attempt this if you're comfortable on steep, uneven terrain and can carry 1L water per hour minimum.

Trail Highlights

Druid Arch—one of the most spectacular rock formations in The Needles. The final 1.25 miles deliver serious geology and an adrenaline-pumping scramble with ladder climbing.

Insider Tips

• The 'false summit' at mile 8 tricks hikers. Druid Arch is 0.25 miles further—keep pushing. • The ladder climb is sandwiched between two steep scrambles; pace yourself. • Morning hikers catch Druid Arch in shadow—afternoon light is better for photos. • Bring a camera with strap; hands are free only at safe moments.

Best Season to Hike

Spring (April–May) and Fall (September–October)

Hiking Tips

  • Carry 1L water per hour (minimum 6L for most hikers). Filter creek water if available, but assume dry.
  • Wear sturdy hiking boots—loose rock shreds shoes and ankles. Trekking poles reduce knee strain on descent.
  • Tighten your boots before the ladder section. Test your grip on scrambles beforehand.
  • Headlamp mandatory (canyon shadows fall early).
  • Bring a topo map and compass—trail markers thin out in upper sections.

Family Info

Not family-friendly. Ladder climb and scrambling demand strength and nerve. Drop-offs and loose terrain are hazards for unsupervised children. Best for fit teenagers and adults.
