The Alkali Flat Trail is the most strenuous trail at White Sands National Parkβa 5-mile dune gauntlet with no water and no shade. You'll spend 3 hours climbing and descending loose sand, gaining 1000+ feet of elevation across unrelenting terrain. The reward: commanding views of the vast dunefield and the final remnant of Lake Otero from the ridge. Fitness and preparation are not optional.

The payoff unfolds progressively. Each climbed dune reveals more of the vast White Sands dunefield stretching to the horizon. At the 2.5-mile turnaround, the full Alkali Flat panorama reveals itselfβa stark white basin surrounded by tall dunes with the Alamogordo military range visible in the distance. This is the most strenuous trail in the park, but the solitude and scale reward the effort.
β’ The uniform dune landscape is disorientingβred diamond markers are your lifeline. Watch for them constantly; don't assume you can navigate by visual landmarks. β’ Water caches do not exist; carry every drop from the trailhead. β’ Most turnarounds happen by mile 2 due to heat and fatigue; pace yourself accordingly and accept that turning back is the right call. β’ The descent is harder on knees than the ascentβuse poles and conservative pacing to save your legs for the return. β’ October-April is vastly superior to summer; don't attempt this June-August. β’ Hike with a partner; solo hiking in this remote, harsh environment is high-risk. β’ Dawn departure at 6am is non-negotiable if you want to finish before peak heat.
