Day 1 South Unit
One day in Theodore Roosevelt National Park: the South Unit
The South Unit's scenic drive is the spine of the day, with five short trails strung along it.

Start at the South Unit entrance in Medora via I-94 Exit 24 or 27. Explore the currently open South Unit Scenic Drive and signed trail access. Painted Canyon is a SEPARATE stop reached from I-94 Exit 32, not from the scenic loop; choose a short overlook/walk or a prepared longer hike, not both automatically. For the North Unit take US-85 north from I-94 Exit 42 near Belfield; its entrance is south of Watford City, not on ND-3. None of these trails have posted mileage or time estimates on this site yet, so budget the day loosely. A short-sounding stop can still take a while once you add the overlook and photos. Coal Vein Trail Turn and Badlands Spur Trail read like quick add-ons off the main loop rather than full hikes; treat them that way until the site's trail pages fill in distances.

Day 2 North Unit

The North Unit is a separate drive from the South Unit, not an afternoon add-on — give it its own day.

Use the North Unit Scenic Drive with Little Mo Trail, Caprock Coulee and Sperati Point from Oxbow Overlook. Ridgeline and Talkington are South Unit trails, not North Unit stops; Ridgeline is currently inaccessible because of a road collapse. Do not combine the units as one short drive.
Little Mo has a 0.7-mile paved inner loop or 1.1-mile unpaved outer loop (NPS: 30–45 minutes). Caprock Coulee offers a 1.5-mile return nature walk (about one hour) or the more strenuous 4.3-mile loop (2–3 hours). Sperati Point is a 1.5-mile return walk from Oxbow Overlook (about one hour). Choose the Caprock option that fits your day; carry water and check current conditions.
