St. Mary is a small unincorporated village in Glacier County on the western edge of the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, at the junction where Going-to-the-Sun Road meets US 89. It is the park's east entrance: the St. Mary Visitor Center, the entrance station and St. Mary Campground sit just inside the boundary, and the village itself is a cluster of lodging, two gas stations, a supermarket and a handful of restaurants around the highway junction. With 54 residents at the 2020 census and an elevation of 4,633 feet, it is a service stop and a base, not a resort town. From here the Sun Road climbs west to Logan Pass in about an hour, Many Glacier is reached north through Babb, and Two Medicine south via US 89 and Highway 49.
The drive: At the east entrance. The St. Mary entrance station is the eastern entry point of Going-to-the-Sun Road (NPS) and the visitor center is at the edge of the village. West Glacier is about 50 miles and roughly 2 hours west across the Sun Road when the road is fully open; Babb and the turn for Many Glacier Road are 9 miles north on US 89.
From our visits, August 2024 and September 2025 The St. Mary side still carries standing fire-killed trees, and in high wind they drop across trails without warning - one fell about a hundred feet behind a group of hikers.

05 / BEFORE YOU DRIVE TO THE ENTRANCE
This is the east side's main resupply. Fill the tank, buy groceries and ice at St. Mary Supermarket, and pick up bear spray before heading to Many Glacier or over the pass. Browning and Great Falls are the next full-service towns east.

07 / THE DETAILS THAT CHANGE THE PLAN
Fly: Glacier Park International Airport (FCA, Kalispell), about 2 hours west across Going-to-the-Sun Road when it is fully open; Great Falls International is 130-165 miles east of the east-side entrances per NPS..
The park's ticketed Logan Pass Shuttle runs July 1 to September 7, 2026 with express east-side service from the St. Mary Visitor Center and Rising Sun. A $1 ticket is required for each person over age 2. Travel time to Logan Pass is about 60 minutes; the last departure from Logan Pass back to St. Mary is 8:00 pm. No shuttle serves Many Glacier or Two Medicine.
NPS notes there is no cell coverage in the park outside Apgar and St. Mary, so this is your last reliable signal on the east side. St. Mary Village offers complimentary Wi-Fi.
Peak: July and August, when the Sun Road is fully open and the shuttle runs. The village's operating season runs roughly late May to early October, matching St. Mary Village's May 29 to October 5 dates.. Shoulder: Late May to June and September to early October, when the Sun Road is only partly open.. Late June through mid-September for the full Sun Road. Late June and September are quieter; July and August bring the shuttle, the Logan Pass parking limit and the crowds.

Two gas stations, a supermarket, gift shops, an outdoor gear shop and several restaurants at the junction; the St. Mary Visitor Center, entrance station and St. Mary Campground inside the park boundary. Babb, 9 miles north, has the last services before Many Glacier. Browning, the nearest larger town, is southeast on US 89.
St. Mary Village, the Pursuit complex at the junction, has 127 rooms across seven buildings ranging from budget motel rooms to tiny homes and an upscale hotel wing, open May 29 to October 5 in 2026. Johnson's of St. Mary, on the hill above the junction, has cabins, RV and tent sites and a homemade-food restaurant, mid-May to late September. Red Eagle Motel and Heart of Glacier RV Park and Cabins are also in the village, and the St Mary/East Glacier KOA is just north on US 89. Inside the park, St. Mary Campground has 148 sites on Recreation.gov and the Rising Sun Motor Inn is 6 miles up the Sun Road. Everything here is seasonal; book July and August months ahead.
Nearly everything closes. Lodging, restaurants and the visitor center shut for the season, and the alpine section of Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed. St. Mary Campground stays open for primitive camping.

Buy the $1 shuttle ticket before you plan a Logan Pass day, since summer parking there is limited to three hours. Fill up here; Babb is the only other fuel before Many Glacier.

No. The village is just outside the boundary on the Blackfeet Reservation. The entrance station, visitor center and St. Mary Campground are inside the park at the west edge of town.
