Use Lakeside as a base for Glacier NP adventures while enjoying lakefront scenery, resort amenities, and a quieter pace when the crowds thin.

Lakeside fits if

  • Flathead Lake is half the trip and Glacier is a long day trip.
  • You have a boat, a paddleboard or a lake cabin already booked.

Think twice if

  • Glacier is the main event; you are about 55 minutes from Apgar each way.
  • You want to be first at a trailhead.

Editorial day shapes, not timed routes. The order follows the Glacier guide: park days first, a slower day when you need one, the far side of the park only if you have the time.

DAY 1 · IN THE PARK

Lake McDonald and the Sun Road

  1. Leave early, fuel and coffee in town
  2. Park at Apgar, ride the shuttle up to Logan Pass
  3. Back in town for dinner

The classic west-side day. The road from Apgar is the reason to sleep on this side.

DAY 2 · IN THE PARK

A west-side trail day

  1. Bear spray and lunch packed before you leave
  2. One trail: Avalanche Lake, Trail of the Cedars or a Lake McDonald shoreline walk
  3. An easy evening back in town

Pick one trail and give it the day. Trailhead parking fills by mid-morning in summer.

DAY 3 · NEAR TOWN

A slower day near town

  1. Late breakfast
  2. Something outside the park: the river, a lake, a short local trail
  3. Early dinner

For a rest day, a smoky or rainy day, or the day you arrive.

DAY 4 · IN THE PARK

Two Medicine or the east side

  1. Earliest start of the trip
  2. Around the south of the park on US 2 to East Glacier and Two Medicine
  3. Long drive back, or sleep on the east side

• Gas up at Aries Gas & Grocery, the Exxon on US-93. • Flathead Harbor fuel dock is seasonal and currently closed. • Blacktail Grocery (105 Stoner Creek Rd) is your main local shop. • Stock up in Kalispell or Missoula for specialized gear or bulk groceries. • Bring cash where possible; verify hours the day of travel.
