Great Smoky Mountains National Park
Bryson City is the Swain County seat and main western gateway to GSMNP, lying 19.7 km (20–25 minutes) south of the park entrance. The town's draw centers on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad—a heritage railroad offering scenic excursion tours through the Nantahala valley—and serves as a base for outdoor recreation including fly fishing on the Nantahala River and Fontana Lake, with guide services available through the Nantahala Outdoor Center. Though small (1,388 residents), the town provides 10 hotels, 2 B&Bs, and 16 restaurants for park visitors.
Authentic working county seat with outdoor-recreation focus—not a resort town. Downtown has practical services and is walkable. Expect a mixed atmosphere of locals and tourists, families and hikers. Honest and unpretentious.
