About This Attraction
The hairpin switchback frames your first encounter with the narrow, mountainside-carved section of Going-to-the-Sun Roadβthe dramatic transition from broad valley floor to cliff-clinging highway. This marks where road builders faced the steepest challenge: 600 vertical feet of ascent required rapid switchback through the glacier-carved valley wall. The Loop Trail begins here, climbing 4.2 miles and 2,600 feet to Granite Park Chalet, opening access to high alpine meadows. Visible rock layers in the road cut expose Precambrian Belt Supergroup strata tilted by ancient uplift.
