This scenic landscape originated from an active sand and gravel mining site—the extraction created a depression now filled with water and repurposed for recreation. From the station, connector trails extend east to the Towpath Trail and west to Hale Farm & Village, a living history museum. Beaver Marsh, one of the park's premier wildlife viewing areas, lies a quarter mile south on the Towpath Trail.
