HM-69 Security Down Range

Natural Attraction
A white warning sign with black and red lettering indicating the severe penalty for trespass

This replica security sign echoes the warnings that once guarded a Cold War-era Nike missile base hidden within Everglades National Park. The marker displays text from a 1954 Defense Department directive establishing the restricted military area, warning of use of deadly force—a stark reminder of the tension and secrecy that surrounded U.S. air defense installations during the Cold War era. The original sign now rests inside nearby Missile Barn C (stop #6 on the tour). This location illustrates the extreme security measures that protected the installation and shaped the landscape of American military preparedness.
