How To Get There: On the Grand Loop Road between Canyon Village and Fishing Bridge; the valley flanks the road for roughly six miles.

Best Time To Visit: Dawn and dusk for active wildlife; July and August for the bison rut, when herds and traffic jams both peak.
Seasonal Access: Road open May through October 31 in 2026; closed to cars in winter.

Safety

Safety Considerations: Prime grizzly country - carry bear spray away from your vehicle and respect the seasonal off-trail closure. Bison have injured more visitors than any other animal in the park.

Off-trail travel is prohibited July 15 to September 15 in the valley's bear management area; the Mary Mountain Trail itself remains open
