Isle Royale has no roads, so this plan follows how visitors actually move through it: from the boat landing outward. Rock Harbor, on the island's northeast end, is where the one-day trip stays, using the Harbor to Hills trail as far as Daisy Farm and a stop at Raspberry Island. That is Day 1, the plan for anyone with a single day between boat departures.

A three-day trip keeps going. Day 2 pushes the Harbor to Hills route deeper inland and picks up the Greenstone Ridge Trail along the island's spine. Day 3 crosses to Windigo, the island's other harbor, and adds the Feldtmann Loop on the south shore. The order follows the island's own geography, harbor to ridge to the far harbor, not an arbitrary list.

Day 1 Rock Harbor side

One day on Isle Royale: the Rock Harbor side

Every trail on this list starts within walking distance of the boat dock, because Rock Harbor is the only way in from this side of the island.

Rock Harbor is where boat and seaplane traffic lands on the island's northeast end, and the trails closest to it are the ones a single day can cover. Explore Raspberry Island is its own short stop near the harbor, a separate island reached by water rather than by trail.

From Rock Harbor, the Harbor to Hills route heads inland in sections: the first leg goes from Rock Harbor to Three Mile, and the second continues from Three Mile to Daisy Farm. Together they cover the stretch of trail closest to where most visitors arrive.

Watch the brush along the way for American marten, one of the island's cataloged residents. They move fast and low, more often glimpsed than watched.

With kids: This guide's current listings are all backcountry trail segments; none are flagged here as an easy walk for young kids.

Day 2 Greenstone Ridge, the island's spine

Day 2: the Greenstone Ridge crossing

The trails move away from the water here, tracing the island's ridge and its inland lakes instead of its shoreline.

The Greenstone Ridge Trail runs the spine of the island, and this guide's listings pick it up mid-route: Lookout Louise to Mount Franklin, then Mount Franklin to Mount Ojibway, both on the ridge's eastern half.

Back at the harbor side, the Harbor to Hills trail keeps going past where Day 1 stopped: Daisy Farm to Moskey Basin, Moskey Basin to Lake Richie, and Lake Richie to West Chickenbone, tracing a line inland and west, away from the boat landing.

Further along the ridge, the Greenstone continues from Chickenbone Lake to Hatchet Lake, closing the gap between the harbor-side approach and the ridge trail above it. Together the two routes cover the island's middle third.

With kids: This day's listings are all backcountry ridge and inland-lake trail segments; this guide does not flag any of them as suitable for young kids.

Day 3 Windigo side

Day 3: Windigo and the Feldtmann Loop

Windigo is the island's other harbor, and every route in this guide either starts there or ends there.

Windigo sits on the island's southwest end, the second boat landing and the finish line for several of these trails. The Greenstone Ridge's last cataloged leg here runs from Hatchet Lake to Ishpeming Tower, and the Minong Ridge's fourth section comes in from North Desor and ends at Windigo itself.

South of Windigo, the Feldtmann Loop splits into two legs in this guide: the first from Windigo out to Feldtmann Lake, the second from Feldtmann Lake to Siskiwit Bay on the island's south shore, the loop's outer edge.

Close the day near where it started. The Windigo Nature Trail is the short walk at the harbor itself, the island's other easy stop for whatever daylight is left after the ridge and the loop.

With kids: The Windigo Nature Trail is the shortest, harbor-side walk in this guide; the ridge and loop legs on this day are backcountry trail segments, not flagged here as kid-easy.
