Weekend at Grand Canyon National Park
Two days of canyon descent and panoramic rim overlooks on the South Rim.
The Grand Canyon stretches for 278 miles across the Arizona plateau, a mile-deep chasm revealing 1.8 billion years of geological history in towering strata.
- 1.2M Acres
- 278 River miles
- 595 Miles of trails
- 1 mile Average depth

Day 1: Into the Canyon
Stay: Stay at Bright Angel Lodge, Maswik, Thunderbird, or Yavapai on the rim.
First time below the rim reveals the canyon's stratigraphic layers and inner workings.
- Take the Bright Angel Trail down toward 1.5-Mile Resthouse, passing through Havasupai Gardens and historic switchbacks that descend 1,120 feet.
- Water and shade rest stops make this the safest intro to the inner canyon.

Day 2: Panoramic Rim
Stay: Depart South Rim or stay another night at rim lodges.
Panoramic views from the rim connect the geological formations you saw from below.
- Ride the free Hermits Rest shuttle through nine viewpoints—Hopi Point, Mohave Point, The Abyss—then drive Desert View Road east for Lipan Point and the historic Desert View Watchtower.
- Plan stops at Navajo Point for sunrise or Lipan Point for sunset.
Common Questions
When can I hike into the Grand Canyon safely in summer?
NPS recommends avoiding below-rim hiking between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. due to extreme heat. Start before sunrise or after 4 p.m. Winter and spring (November–May) are safer for longer hikes due to cooler temperatures and lower thunderstorm risk.
Do I need a permit for day hikes?
No, day hikes don't require permits regardless of distance. Backcountry overnight trips need recreation.gov permits ($10 lottery application + $15 per person per night). Apply 4 months in advance.
Why is the North Rim closed?
The North Rim was devastated by wildfire in July 2025. The historic Grand Canyon Lodge, cabins, employee housing, and Visitor Center were destroyed. The North Rim is expected to remain closed through Spring 2026, and rim-to-rim hiking is not possible through early 2027.
Can I see the Colorado River from the South Rim?
Yes, but views are limited from most overlooks. Hopi Point, Mohave Point, and Lipan Point offer clear river views. Hiking below the rim provides the most dramatic and detailed perspective of the river canyon.
What's the best time for sunset photography?
Lipan Point and Hopi Point are prime sunset locations. Arrive 30–60 minutes before sunset to secure prime viewing and photography spots, especially during peak summer season.
