3 Flightseeing Tour Options in Denali National Park
See Denali from the air—compare north-side scenic flights to south-side glacier landings.
Denali National Park's vastness means most of the wilderness stays inaccessible by road. Flightseeing tours are the only way to see the mountain up close, walk on glaciers, and witness the full scale of the Alaska Range from above.
- 20,310 ft Denali's elevation
- 6M Park acres
- $15 Entrance fee
- Year-round Flightseeing available
Denali Peak Experience Flight — Denali Area (North Side)

The most popular north-side approach—close approaches to the summit with views of surrounding peaks.
- Approaches within 0.5 mile of Denali summit on clear days
- Kahiltna Glacier, Ruth Gorge, Wickersham Wall, Mount Foraker views
- Individual headsets with full narration throughout the flight
- Twin-engine aircraft with large windows at every seat
- Daily departures every two hours (8am–8pm) through September
The flight
The Red Route departs from Healy, near the park's north entrance. Twin-engine aircraft with full-cabin windows seat 5-6 passengers, each with individual headsets for narration. The plane threads between alpine peaks (Mount Mather, Silverthrone, Mount Huntington) and approaches within half a mile of Denali's 20,310-ft summit on clear days.
Glacier views
The route covers Kahiltna Glacier (45 miles, the park's longest), Ruth Gorge (deepest glacier canyon in North America with mile-high granite walls), and Wickersham Wall (14,000 feet of unbroken ice and rock). Muldrow Glacier and the northeast ridge climbing route frame the mountain's north face. The perspective shifts as the plane circles Denali's entire north flank in under an hour.
How to book
Denali Air operates May 15–September 15 with flights every two hours (8am, 10am, noon, 2pm, 4pm, 6pm, 8pm). Courtesy ground transportation from Denali area hotels included. Weather decisions made ~1 hour before departure; 24-hour cancellation required for refunds.
Southside Explorer — Talkeetna (South Side)

Entry-level glacier landing with Ruth Gorge's mile-high granite walls and the historic Don Sheldon Amphitheater.
- Glacier landing included; walk on Ruth Glacier at 6,600 ft
- Ruth Gorge's mile-high granite walls and 4,000-foot river of ice
- Don Sheldon Amphitheater—historic cabin built by legendary pilot Sheldon
- Only company performing more glacier landings than any other worldwide
- 30-minute landing window; over-boots and safety equipment provided
Glacier landing included
Unlike most flightseeing tours, the Southside Explorer lands on Ruth Glacier at 6,600 ft. You'll walk on blue ice, see crevasses and meltwater pools, and visit the Don Sheldon Amphitheater—a historic cabin built in 1965 by legendary Alaskan pilot Don Sheldon. Over-boots provided; landing duration ~30 minutes.
What you'll see
The route covers Ruth Glacier's Great Gorge (deepest canyon in North America), mile-high granite walls, and a 4,000-foot-thick river of ice. The plane circles Mount Barille, Mount Barrille, Moose's Tooth, and Explorer's Peak—a compressed view of the Alaska Range's south face. This south-side perspective shows glaciers you can't see from north-side tours.
Logistics
Tours depart from Talkeetna State Airport (TKA), a 100-mile drive north of Anchorage. Talkeetna Air Taxi has performed more glacier landings than any other company worldwide. Operations run year-round, but main season is May 1–September 30; winter landings are intermittent and weather-dependent.
Grand Denali — Talkeetna (South Side)

The premium comprehensive tour—seven glaciers, Wickersham Wall, and the full Kahiltna and Ruth glacier systems.
- Covers all seven major Southside glaciers in one flight
- Kahiltna (45 miles), Ruth, Tokositna, Eldridge, Kanikula, Buckskin, Coffee glaciers
- Wickersham Wall (world's greatest vertical relief) and Ruth Amphitheater
- Multiple perspectives on Denali's west face and Mount Foraker
- Expert pilots with FAA recurrent training and glacier-operations certification
Seven glaciers in one tour
The Grand Denali covers all seven major glaciers in the Southside system: Kahiltna (45 miles long, the park's longest), Ruth, Tokositna, Eldridge, Kanikula, Buckskin, and Coffee. The plane makes banking passes over cascading icefalls and crevasse fields, showing how each glacier flows from the Alaska Range's high peaks. This density of ice-carved topography is unmatched from any single flightseeing tour.
Walls and perspective
You'll see Wickersham Wall, which has the world's greatest continual vertical relief—14,000 feet of unbroken ice and rock on Denali's north face. The route also circles the Ruth Amphitheater's 5,000-foot granite walls and provides views of Mount Hunter (14,500 ft) and Mount Foraker (17,402 ft) from the west. These perspectives showcase climbing routes and terrain invisible from the ground or north-side tours.
Book and prepare
Flights depart from Talkeetna State Airport. The 90-minute flight includes a glacier landing (weather permitting) with ~30 minutes on ice. Tours operate year-round but peak season (May 1–Sept 30) offers the most reliable weather. This is Talkeetna Air Taxi's flagship tour—book early for summer dates.
Common Questions
What's the difference between north-side and south-side tours?
North-side tours (Denali Air) approach Denali's summit from the north and focus on scenic views of surrounding peaks and glaciers; they do not land. South-side tours (Talkeetna Air Taxi) operate from Talkeetna and include glacier landings, letting you walk on ice and explore at altitude. South-side tours show different faces of the mountain and glaciers.
Do I need a passport or special documentation?
All operators are based within Alaska and do not cross international borders, so a passport is not required. Bring a government-issued ID for check-in. FAA regulations apply to all flights.
What happens if weather cancels my tour?
Weather is the primary cancellation factor. Denali Air makes decisions ~1 hour before departure and requires 24-hour notice for refunds. Talkeetna Air Taxi typically makes decisions early morning based on cloud cover and wind; rebooking to another date is common. Budget extra days in your itinerary for weather delays.
Can I combine flightseeing with other Denali activities?
Yes. Many visitors do a flightseeing tour one day and a ground-based activity (Savage River trails, park shuttle bus, winter skiing) another day. Denali Air includes courtesy transportation from area hotels, so timing is flexible.
Is the glacier landing safe for kids or those with physical limitations?
Glacier landings involve 6,600-ft altitude, uneven ice, and high-altitude exertion. Children and those with heart or respiratory conditions should consult tour operators before booking. Talkeetna Air Taxi provides over-boots but not specialized equipment for mobility challenges.
