Group SitePine Springs Campground
Main developed campground in Guadalupe Mountains. Year-round tent and RV sites, reservable via Recreation.gov.

Mescalero is a primitive backcountry campground for experienced wilderness campers: eight tent pads accessed by foot trail only (6.2 miles from Pine Springs or 4.7 miles from Dog Canyon). Perched on a slope in ponderosa pine and brush overlooking a small drainage, it serves as an ideal base camp for exploring Guadalupe's high-country trails. No water, toilets, or fires—bring a stove, filtration, and commercial toilet bags. Wilderness permits required.
✅ BOOK IF: Experienced backcountry campers seeking true wilderness solitude; hikers using Mescalero as a high-country base camp. ❌ SKIP IF: First-time campers, families with young children, anyone requiring water/toilets/fires; folks expecting developed amenities.
Tent-only (primitive wilderness sites)
Ponderosa pine forest with drainage views; high-country exposure
El Capitan, Guadalupe Peak Viewpoint, Smith Spring, Manzanita Spring, The Grotto (all within park)
Challenging for families with young children and inexperienced campers due to backcountry access requirements (no water, no toilets, no services) and 6+ mile hike. Minimum age 10+ with backpacking experience recommended.
Expect a 4–6 hour hike with full backpack. Sites are on flat tent pads on sloped terrain; no vehicle staging. Arrive early in the day to secure sunlight for camp setup. Stash heavy items at base camp and day-hike from Mescalero.
True wilderness backpacking experience with zero developed amenities. Expect solitude, pristine terrain, and the sounds of nature. Not a destination for comfort seekers—this is pure backcountry.
