Overview

About This Campground

Marcus Wilderness Campground is a remote backcountry site requiring a Wilderness Use Permit and 3.7-mile hike from Dog Canyon trailhead. Five primitive tent pads sit in a pinion-juniper forest, shaded and protected from wind, at high desert elevation. This is not a traditional campground—it's a self-sufficient wilderness experience for experienced backpackers only, with zero facilities and strict Leave No Trace rules.

Not suitable for young children or casual family camping. Requires 3.7-mile wilderness hike carrying full pack, water, stove, and all supplies. Camping Tips

  • Bring 2+ liters of water per person; no refills on-site. Filter or treat any backcountry water sources.
  • Commercial landfill-safe toilet bag system mandatory; proof required at permit check-in. Budget one bag per person per night.
  • Containerized fuel stove only—campfires absolutely prohibited. Bring extra fuel canisters; no firewood gathering.
  • Start hike early; 3.7 miles uphill takes 2–3 hours. Headlamp essential for dim light or emergency return.
  • Cairns mark the trail, not blazes. Pay attention; trail is not frequently used. Download offline map/GPS.
  • Stake tent well; even in sheltered pinion-juniper forest, high desert winds can develop. Use all guy lines.
  • Never take shortcuts on trails; erosion damage is permanent.
  • Pack all trash, food waste, and used fuel canisters. Leave no trace—this wilderness is your responsibility.

The Setup

After 3.7-mile hike from Dog Canyon, locate your assigned primitive tent pad within the pinion-juniper grove. Ground is uneven soil; scout for level spots or use camp rocks to level sleeping area. Stake tent securely with all guy lines, even though forest provides wind shelter. Site your stove downwind and away from tent. Hang food per Leave No Trace (or use bear-resistant container). Dig cat hole at least 200 feet downslope from any water sources. Fire grill only for water boiling (containerized stove preferred to save fuel).

The Vibe

This is true wilderness, not a developed campground. You will find no amenities, no neighbors, no noise—just primitive tent pads in a remote forest and complete self-sufficiency. Silence is the defining feature. Intended for experienced backpackers only who understand and embrace Leave No Trace ethics. Parking-lot comfort seekers: do not come here.

Bath & Laundry

No showers, no laundry. Rinse with bottled water or creek water if you locate a source (treat before drinking). This is a pack-in/pack-out wilderness experience. Hygiene is minimal; bring wet wipes and dry clothes. Expect to feel primitive when you leave.

What Campers Say

Solitude seekers and serious backpackers praise Marcus for pristine wilderness isolation and Leave No Trace purity. Not recommended for car campers, families with young kids, or anyone needing facilities. True wilderness experience—expect silence, self-reliance, and a challenging hike in.
