Fins & Things 4×4 Trail
Fins & Things 4×4 Trail
Fins & Things is a self-guided 9.4-mile loop in Sand Flats that tests driver skill on slickrock and loose sand. A high-clearance 4x4 with low-range is non-negotiable, and recovery gear is strongly advised. Expect a roller-coaster ride of steep climbs, descents, and rocky ledges, with La Sal Mountain views along the way. Start early in spring or fall to dodge heat and crowds; parts of the trail may be daylight-only.

Before you book
Do I need a guide or can I do this self-guided trip?
This is self-guided; you must be an experienced driver with a high-clearance 4x4 and recovery gear. A spotter is wise if you’re new to the terrain.
Is there an entry fee I should know about?
Yes. Sand Flats Recreation Area charges: $5 day pass, $10 7-day pass, $25 annual pass. Out-of-state ATV/UTV permits run $30.
What if I can't finish the loop due to vehicle trouble?
Turnarounds are allowed; there are no guided guarantees. Ensure you have recovery gear and know your vehicle’s limits before starting.
Is this family-friendly for older kids?
Not ideal for very young children; older kids who handle rough terrain and off-road driving may enjoy with supervision.
What should I bring to survive the day?
Bring water, sun protection, closed-toe shoes, and a recovery kit. Ensure tires are appropriate, and bring a spotter if it’s your first time on this loop.
