Overview

About This Activity

Wilderness horse camping at Guadalupe Mountains is self-reliant backcountry access: you, your horse, and rocky terrain with no NPS maintenance or guides. Most trips run 2-7 days through single-track trails with loose rock and tight passages. Spring and fall are ideal; summer heat and winter snow are serious obstacles. This is for experienced equestrians only—there's no guide, no easy out.

Highlights

Book If / Skip If

BOOK IF: You ride well, own a horse, and want wilderness solitude without hand-holding. SKIP IF: You need guides, lodging amenities, or this is your first backcountry trip.

What Makes It Unique

Authentic wilderness backcountry access for horses without commercial guiding—true solitude and self-reliance in a national park setting.

The Smart Move

Book your corral and campsite as soon as spring season opens in January. Fall trips fill by August. Get your free wilderness permit at Pine Springs upon arrival. Don't underestimate preparation—pack as if you're going to be stuck for a few extra days.

Best Time to Visit

Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) for moderate temperatures and stable trail conditions. Winter trips possible but require specialized cold-weather skills and gear. Summer (June–August) is generally too hot for extended backcountry riding.
