Q: When is this area fully accessible?

Apgar Village is accessible year-round from the west entrance. However, Going-to-the-Sun Road eastward opens late June and closes mid-October due to snow.

Q: Can I visit without a car?

Yes. The shuttle runs July 1–September 7 with stops at Apgar. Bicycles are welcome and rentals are available on-site. Backcountry access via boat launches is also an option.

Q: Is there enough to do for a short visit?

Yes. A 1–2 hour stop allows you to get permits, grab food, visit the Nature Center (which has glaciation exhibits), and view the lake's U-shaped basin—one of the park's most distinctive glacial features.

Q: Do I need permits for everything?

Day use of the village and lake shore is free. Backcountry camping requires a permit (obtainable at Apgar). Boat rentals and bicycle rentals are separate paid services.

Getting There

Directions:

Apgar Village is located on Going-to-the-Sun Road at the foot of Lake McDonald on Glacier's west side. Enter via the west entrance (near West Glacier, MT), then head onto GTSR toward Logan Pass—Apgar is the immediate service hub at the start of the scenic drive. GTSR opens late June and closes mid-October; winter access is from the west entrance only.

Seasonal Access: Late June to mid-October: full Going-to-the-Sun Road access. November to June: accessible from west entrance only; GTSR sections closed due to snow.

Parking: Auto parking available. Lot fills during mid-day summer hours (July–August). Arrive early (before 9am) or after 5pm for better availability.
