The Needles rise as an arresting grid of sandstone spires and fins—sharp vertical walls fractured into parallel lines that dominate the landscape. Beneath this fractured geometry lies an ancient story: 300 million years ago, an immense salt layer was buried beneath coastal sand dunes and mountain sediment. Over time, the crushing weight of overlying rock caused that salt to flow like cold molasses through the bedrock, fracturing the rigid sandstone above into the grid-like pattern you see today. Rainwater, ice, and wind have since eroded along these fractures, slowly carving the spires, fins, and canyons of the Needles.
