A weathered one-room cabin, just 17 by 15 feet, sits here because John Wesley Wolfe found the one thing the Colorado Plateau rarely offers—reliable water from Salt Wash. Arriving in 1898 seeking relief from a Civil War injury, Wolfe and his son Fred built this simple structure and eventually grazed over 1,000 head of cattle on native grasses surrounding the site. When Wolfe's daughter Flora arrived in 1906, she demanded basic comforts: wooden flooring and glass windows, which arrived via Sears catalog. The cabin's story reflects both the resilience required to settle a marginal high-desert environment and the lasting ecological impact—native grasses remain sparse here over a century after grazing ended.
