Natural Attraction

Darwin’s Place

Natural Attraction
A small beach clearing surrounded by shrubby green vegetation. A blue vault toilet is observed

A flat shell-and-cement clearing framed by mangroves marks Arthur Darwin's last private homestead on park lands (1945–1971)—the island's artifacts remain protected in place. Originally known as Chevelier Place after a plume hunter, it later became Opossum Key for the wildlife that inhabited it. Visitors approach by water via the Wilderness Waterway, tying vessels securely on a shallow beach with no dock facility; the site rewards those willing to navigate backcountry waters to witness this remnant of human settlement in the Everglades.
