About This Attraction

From the pullout, a striking stone arch frames views across Bryce Canyon's pink hoodoo amphitheater. Despite its name, this natural arch wasn't carved by flowing water but by ice expansion—water seeps into cracks, freezes overnight, expands, and slowly splits the rock apart from within. A more weathering-resistant cap layer protects softer mudstone below, channeling the freeze-thaw cycle into a steadily widening window. As the plateau rim erodes backward, a gully beneath the arch has grown more than 125 feet deep—a preview of new hoodoos that will form when the arch eventually collapses.

What Makes It Special

Named a "bridge" but actually an arch—the distinction matters. Water-carved natural bridges form when a stream cuts through a ridge; this arch formed by freeze-thaw cycles cracking rock from within. It's one of the park's largest ice-carved windows and a rare stand-alone demonstration of the periglacial process that creates Bryce's hoodoos. One of 9 viewpoints on the Southern Scenic Drive.

Safety Considerations

Do not lean over the rim edge—the viewing area is unfenced. The arch structure is stable, but the surrounding plateau rim is exposed; stay at least 25 feet from cliff edges. The arch will eventually collapse, a natural end-state. Supervisor children closely near the rim.

Visitor Tips

  • Look for visible freeze-thaw fracture patterns in the arch walls—these are actively being widened
  • Step back to frame the full arch against the hoodoos behind it for the best photograph
  • Compare this arch to nearby hoodoos to understand the progression: window → collapsed arch → twin hoodoos
  • Visit early morning for warmest light on the red rocks and highest clarity
  • Watch for mule deer and gray jays, especially at dawn and dusk; maintain 25-foot distance
