Boston first flourished as a canal-era boat-building community following the Ohio and Erie Canal's arrival in 1827, then quieted as canal traffic declined with railroad expansion in the 1850s. The town experienced a second boom after the Valley Railway opened in 1880, particularly when the Cleveland-Akron Bag Company began operations in 1902, manufacturing roofing paper and paper bag liners. The photograph records this pivotal moment when the paper mill drove local economy and attracted immigrant workers to this company town.
