Overview

About This Campground

Mescalero is a primitive backcountry campground for experienced wilderness campers: eight tent pads accessed by foot trail only (6.2 miles from Pine Springs or 4.7 miles from Dog Canyon). Perched on a slope in ponderosa pine and brush overlooking a small drainage, it serves as an ideal base camp for exploring Guadalupe's high-country trails. No water, toilets, or fires—bring a stove, filtration, and commercial toilet bags. Wilderness permits required.

Highlights

Camping Tips

  • Bring a lightweight canister stove—campfires are banned.
  • Filter or treat all water; nearest reliable source is a drainage below camp (verify current conditions via NPS).
  • Pack-out toilet bags must be in your permit inventory.
  • Arrive by mid-afternoon to avoid setting up in darkness.
  • Wild turkeys are common; don't feed them.
  • Bring wool socks and a warm layer—high-country nights drop quickly.

The Setup

Expect a 4–6 hour hike with full backpack. Sites are on flat tent pads on sloped terrain; no vehicle staging. Arrive early in the day to secure sunlight for camp setup. Stash heavy items at base camp and day-hike from Mescalero.

The Vibe

True wilderness backpacking experience with zero developed amenities. Expect solitude, pristine terrain, and the sounds of nature. Not a destination for comfort seekers—this is pure backcountry.
