Overview

About This Activity

East Portal Road is the only way to drive from the rim of the Black Canyon down to the Gunnison River without a rope. It is 5.2 miles of steep, windy pavement hitting 16% grade in spots - put the vehicle in low gear on the way down or you will cook your brakes. At the bottom you get river access, wayside exhibits on the Gunnison Tunnel and Diversion Dam, and a quiet campground. Allow 1-2 hours for a leisurely tour, and leave the big rig up top: vehicles over 22 feet are prohibited.

Highlights

Book If / Skip If

BOOK IF: You want river access and a break from rim-overlook repetition, and your vehicle is under 22 feet with good brakes. SKIP IF: You're towing, driving an RV over 22 feet, white-knuckle on steep grades, or visiting in winter when the road is closed.

What Makes It Unique

The only drivable route to the bottom of the Black Canyon - river access without a wilderness permit or a scramble down a draw.

The White Glove Test

There's no operator to grade here - this is a self-drive on a Bureau of Reclamation road. The 'service' is the road itself: paved, two-way, and well signed from the entrance station, with pullouts where you need them.

The Equipment Check

Your equipment is your vehicle. Anything over 22 feet is prohibited, and the 16% grades will expose tired brakes fast - NPS explicitly says use low gear to avoid burning them out. If your brakes are marginal, skip it.

The Smart Move

Go in low gear from the top, use the pullouts, and budget the full 1-2 hours so you actually stop at the tunnel and dam exhibits instead of just turning around at the river. No booking, no fees beyond park entrance.

Best Time to Visit

Spring through fall - the road is closed in winter, typically from November to April. Day, dawn, and dusk are all workable; the canyon bottom loses light early.

Activity Tips

  • Use low gear on the descent - the 16% grade sections will burn out your brakes if you ride them.
  • Vehicles over 22 feet are prohibited; leave trailers and RVs up top.
  • Use the pullouts to let faster traffic by.
  • No public access beyond the gate about 1.5 miles past the bottom junction.
  • Keep pets leashed (6-foot max) and never leave them in the car - interiors overheat in minutes.
