Overview

About This Activity

Rim Drive is the essential Crater Lake scenic loop: 33 miles of tight turns with 30 overlooks where you stop and actually see the lake. Views are genuinely world-class and the frequent pull-offs break up the drive. Plan 2 hours minimum for the full loop; the narrow, winding road demands focus and is shared with cyclists. Typically open mid-July through October—come prepared for sudden weather and know your vehicle's limits.

Highlights

Book If / Skip If

BOOK IF: You want a classic scenic alpine drive with frequent photo stops, minimal physical exertion, and sweeping lake views. SKIP IF: You prefer straight highways with wide shoulders, have a low tolerance for winding roads, or are driving an RV over 25 feet.

What Makes It Unique

33-mile historic loop with 30 overlooks offering 360-degree views of a pristine 1,900-foot-deep alpine lake and volcanic caldera—accessible from your vehicle without hiking.

The Smart Move

No advance reservations needed. Arrive early in your visit window (July-October). Check NPS road status before driving—weather and maintenance closures are real. Allow 3-4 hours if towing or driving large vehicles; if you can't commit that time, skip this drive.

Best Time to Visit

July through mid-September for best conditions. Early July has full road access and longest daylight but heaviest crowds at overlooks—arrive before 9 a.m. for parking. September offers fewer crowds and good wildlife spotting at dawn and dusk. October is open but weather is unpredictable; check conditions before driving.

Activity Tips

  • Speed limit is 35 mph; road is narrow, winding, and has no shoulders—stay alert.
  • Bring gas (no fuel stops on Rim Drive) and water.
  • Arrive early in the day for overlook parking, especially July-August.
  • Check road and weather conditions before driving; closures happen due to snow and maintenance.
  • Large vehicles and trailers need extra time; allow 3-4 hours instead of 2.
  • Rim Drive is shared with bicyclists—watch for cyclists, especially on descents.
  • Wear layers; elevation averages 7,700 feet and weather changes fast.
  • Binoculars help with wildlife; elk are common at dawn and dusk.
