Overview

About This Trail

The Alkali Flat Trail is the most strenuous trail at White Sands National Parkβ€”a 5-mile dune gauntlet with no water and no shade. You'll spend 3 hours climbing and descending loose sand, gaining 1000+ feet of elevation across unrelenting terrain. The reward: commanding views of the vast dunefield and the final remnant of Lake Otero from the ridge. Fitness and preparation are not optional.

Trail Highlights

The payoff unfolds progressively. Each climbed dune reveals more of the vast White Sands dunefield stretching to the horizon. At the 2.5-mile turnaround, the full Alkali Flat panorama reveals itselfβ€”a stark white basin surrounded by tall dunes with the Alamogordo military range visible in the distance. This is the most strenuous trail in the park, but the solitude and scale reward the effort.

Insider Tips

β€’ The uniform dune landscape is disorientingβ€”red diamond markers are your lifeline. Watch for them constantly; don't assume you can navigate by visual landmarks. β€’ Water caches do not exist; carry every drop from the trailhead. β€’ Most turnarounds happen by mile 2 due to heat and fatigue; pace yourself accordingly and accept that turning back is the right call. β€’ The descent is harder on knees than the ascentβ€”use poles and conservative pacing to save your legs for the return. β€’ October-April is vastly superior to summer; don't attempt this June-August. β€’ Hike with a partner; solo hiking in this remote, harsh environment is high-risk. β€’ Dawn departure at 6am is non-negotiable if you want to finish before peak heat.

Best Season to Hike

October through April (cooler temperatures and stable weather)

Hiking Tips

  • Carry minimum 3L waterβ€”no refill points exist on this trail.
  • Wear full sun protection: sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, UV sunglasses.
  • Trekking poles are strongly recommended for knee support on steep sand descents.
  • Start before 6am to complete the hike before peak heat.
  • Turn back by 2pm regardless of progressβ€”never hike after dark in uniform dune terrain.
  • Tell someone your itinerary and expected return time.

Family Info

Not recommended for children. This trail has no margin for error: no shade, no water, no bailout options, and cliff-edge exposure between dunes. Dehydration risk is serious. Only adults with demonstrated strong fitness should attempt this hike. Unfit hikers and children have no business here.

What Hikers Say

Hikers praise the vast dunefield solitude and views but respect the brutality: extreme heat, zero water, and relentless dune climbs separate the prepared from the unprepared. Most hikers either love this grind or turn back earlyβ€”there is no middle ground. Fitness and preparation are non-negotiable prerequisites.
