Perfect Weekend in Grand Teton National Park
Two days combining Jenny Lake boat shuttle hiking and the Teton Loop wildlife drive.
Grand Teton rises abruptly from Jackson Hole valley—a 7,000-foot granite rampart where subalpine lakes meet meadows and peaks. Early June brings wildflowers and elk herds; September yellows aspens and thins crowds.
- 309K+ Acres
- 13,775 ft Highest peak
- 3.6M+ Annual visitors
- 7,000+ ft Vertical relief

Day 1: Inspiration Point & Hidden Falls
Stay: Jackson Lake Lodge sits central, with restaurants, activities, and easy access to Day 2's wildlife loop.
Jenny Lake and Inspiration Point set the weekend's pace—a half-day introduction to the Cathedral Group that confirms the park's scale without requiring a full-day commitment.
- Take the Jenny Lake boat shuttle west from East Dock to the Hidden Falls trailhead (20-minute ride).
- Hike 1.8 miles round-trip switchbacking 550 feet to Inspiration Point, where the Cathedral Group dominates—Mount Owen (12,928 ft), Teewinot (11,859 ft), and Grand Teton (13,775 ft) span the eastern wall.
- Optional: hike south 0.5 miles to Hidden Falls (100-foot cascade fed by snowmelt).

Day 2: Oxbow Bend & Signal Mountain
Stay: Depart after afternoon activities, or extend at Jackson Lake Lodge (book in advance if staying additional nights).
The Teton Loop captures the park's wildlife diversity and panoramic vistas on a flexible second day, letting weather and energy guide your pace.
- Drive the Grand Teton Park Loop, starting at Oxbow Bend (prime moose habitat, especially dawn/dusk) and Willow Flats (elk herds).
- Follow Signal Mountain Summit Road (13 miles round-trip, scenic pull-outs throughout) for 360-degree views of the Teton Range and Jackson Hole valley from 7,725 feet.
- Pack binoculars; grizzly and black bears roam all elevations.
Common Questions
When should I book lodging for a Grand Teton weekend?
Book 12 months in advance through gtlc.com. The 12-month rolling window opens daily at 8 a.m. MST, and popular June–August dates fill within hours. Alternatively, Recreation.gov offers backcountry camping (6-month rolling, January 7 advance opening) and Colter Bay tent cabins (May–September).
Is the Jenny Lake shuttle worth the cost?
Yes. The shuttle saves 2 miles and 30 minutes each way from the visitor center. Inspiration Point is 1.8 miles round-trip from the shuttle landing (vs. 5.7 miles from South Jenny Lake), making it accessible in a 2–3 hour morning. Shuttles cost $20 round-trip (adults, age 13+) and run every 10–15 minutes May 15–Sept. 30.
Will I see moose and bears?
Moose are nearly guaranteed at Oxbow Bend before 8 a.m. (use binoculars, maintain 25 yards). Bears roam all elevations year-round; maintain 100+ yards and hike in groups of 3+ with bear spray. Early morning (before 7 a.m.) and dusk (after 6 p.m.) are peak viewing times for both species.
What if weather blocks hiking on Day 1?
Hike Taggart-Bradley Lakes Loop instead (1.5–3 hours, lower elevation, forest and meadow views, often clearer weather than alpine). Or visit Craig Thomas Discovery & Visitor Center (open April 10–Oct. 31, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., no entrance fee required) for exhibits, ranger talks, and indoor programs.
Do I need a permit for Jenny Lake day hikes?
No. Jenny Lake trails are day-use only and don't require permits. Backcountry overnight camping requires a permit ($20 fee + $7/person/night, available January 7 on Recreation.gov for May–October trips, with advance slots filling quickly in spring).
