4 Essential Tours at Carlsbad Caverns National Park

Four cave tours ranked—from self-guided walks to technical advanced caving in North America's largest cavern system.

Carlsbad Caverns spans a vast underground world beneath the Chihuahuan Desert in southeastern New Mexico. Carved by sulfuric acid over millions of years, the cave system contains more than 119 caves filled with stalactites, stalagmites, and rare formations. Above ground, rocky canyons and desert plants hide the subterranean labyrinth—but below, temperatures hover at a constant 56°F year-round.

The world's largest cave chamber by volume—a self-guided walk through 1.25 miles of iconic stalactites, stalagmites, and historic artifacts.
  • Largest cave chamber by volume in North America
  • Iconic 1924 rope ladder artifact from National Geographic expedition
  • 1.25-mile relatively flat route accessible via elevator or dramatic Natural Entrance hike
  • 56°F year-round, wheelchair-accessible portions available
  • Most accessible option for families and visitors of all fitness levels

THE ROUTE

The Big Room is accessed by elevator descending 750 feet from the visitor center, bypassing the Natural Entrance trail. From the bottom, the self-guided 1.25-mile loop is relatively flat, taking most visitors 90 minutes. Each section unfolds at your own pace, with interpretive signs explaining the formations, geology, and cave history. You can also access the Big Room by hiking down the steeper Natural Entrance trail instead of using the elevator.

Cave conditions remain constant year-round: 56°F temperature and 90% humidity. Wear layers and bring closed-toe shoes. After exiting, you'll walk on bio-cleaning mats to prevent White-Nose Syndrome fungus spread—a critical protection for cave ecosystems.

WHAT YOU'LL SEE

The chamber features massive stalactites hanging from the ceiling and stalagmites rising from the floor. The 1924 rope ladder used by National Geographic explorers remains preserved as a historical artifact. Formations are delicate—stay on the trail and never touch the cave walls or formations, as skin oils damage them.

LOGISTICS

Timed entry (booked at recreation.gov) is required; the fee is $1 plus $15 entrance fee. Visitor center hours are 9:00 am–5:00 pm daily, and cavern entrance is 9:30 am–2:30 pm. Elevator access is available during those windows. The park is closed Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day.

A ranger-led journey 830 feet underground into four of the cavern's most decorated chambers—filled with rare formations and tripod-friendly photo ops.
  • Four highly decorated chambers with helictites, draperies, columns, and soda straws
  • 830 feet deep—the deepest portion of cavern open to public
  • Tripods permitted; only cavern tour allowing camera stabilizers
  • Ranger-guided interpretive experience
  • Minimum age 8; children under 16 require adult supervision

THE TOUR

A ranger leads groups of up to 20 people on this 1-mile descent into four chambers named the King's Palace, Queen's Palace, Papoose Chamber, and Green Lake Room. The route goes deeper than Big Room, ending 830 feet below the desert surface. At this depth, you'll encounter rare formations called helictites (formations that defy gravity), delicate draperies, columns, and soda straws—all explained by your ranger.

The descent and return require some climbing and uneven footing, but it's less strenuous than the Lower Cave Tour. Most visitors are comfortable with the moderate difficulty level.

RESERVATIONS & REQUIREMENTS

Book in advance at recreation.gov or call 877-444-6777. Children must be at least 8 years old; those under 16 need an adult. Groups are limited to 20 visitors per tour slot. Walk-up tickets are available based on ranger staffing, though reservations are more reliable during peak season.

FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

King's Palace is the only Carlsbad tour permitting tripods—essential for capturing the intricate formations in the cave's low light. Bring your tripod if you have photography experience. Flash photography is prohibited to protect the cave environment.

Squeeze through narrow passages, descend ladders in darkness, and see formations most visitors never reach—the ultimate advanced caving adventure.
  • 60-foot ladder descent and narrow Florida Keyhole squeeze passage
  • The Rookery: cave pearls and Colonel Boles Formation
  • Maze passages requiring stooping and backward walking
  • Helmets with headlamps and gloves provided
  • 3 hours of intense physical and mental challenge

THE CHALLENGE

This backcountry caving experience includes a 60-foot descent down ladders, walking backwards down a 10-foot slick slope using a knotted handline, squeezing through the Florida Keyhole passage, and navigating maze sections where you must stoop walk in total darkness. The Rookery showcases cave pearls—rare formations that roll freely inside cave pools. The Colonel Boles Formation and maze passages deliver formations and experiences absent from other Carlsbad tours.

Not recommended for those with height phobia, poor night vision, or weak knees. The entire experience is 180 minutes with no shortcuts.

GEAR & FOOTWEAR

Helmets with integrated headlamps and gloves are provided. You must wear hiking boots or hiking shoes with aggressive tread—sandals, flip-flops, and tennis shoes are not permitted under any circumstance. Bring only a small fanny pack or camera bag; no backpacks. Personal caving gear is prohibited due to White-Nose Syndrome prevention protocols.

WHO CAN JOIN

Minimum age 12 with adult supervision. You cannot combine Lower Cave and King's Palace on the same day. Arrive 15 minutes early for mandatory safety orientation and ticket pickup. Book in advance at recreation.gov; this tour fills quickly during summer.

Hike 750 feet straight down—the historic 1.25-mile steep paved descent into the cavern used by visitors for decades before the elevator existed.
  • Historic entry point used by cave visitors for generations
  • 750-foot elevation loss—equivalent to walking down a 75-story building
  • Steep paved trail with handrails protecting the descent
  • Connects to Big Room at the bottom
  • More strenuous than elevator; elevator return available

THE DESCENT

Before the elevator opened, all visitors entered through the Natural Entrance—a steep paved trail that drops 750 feet over 1.25 miles. The descent is relentless, with handrails protecting most sections. Not recommended for those with heart or respiratory conditions. Closed-toe hiking boots with good tread are mandatory.

Access is available 9:30 am–2:30 pm; you must complete your descent by 2:30 pm and exit the cave by 3:30 pm at the latest. Most people spend 60 minutes hiking down, then time in Big Room, then take the elevator back up.

THE HISTORIC ROUTE

The natural cave portal is a striking feature—the entrance where rock walls frame your arrival into darkness. This is how everyone experienced Carlsbad Caverns before modern infrastructure. Interpretive signs along the trail explain cave geology and expedition history.

STRATEGY FOR YOUR VISIT

Taking the elevator down and hiking down the Natural Entrance offers a fuller experience than either alone, but hiking both directions is exhausting. Most visitors either hike down and take the elevator up, or vice versa. Budget 2+ hours total (hike down, walk Big Room, elevator up).

Common Questions

Do I need to book tours in advance?

Timed entry reservations are required for all tours. Book at recreation.gov or call 877-444-6777 up to 30 days in advance. Walk-up tickets may be available for King's Palace based on ranger staffing, but reservations are more reliable during peak season (June–September).

What's the best tour for families with young kids?

Big Room Tour is most family-friendly—flat, self-guided, 90 minutes, and accessible via elevator. Children as young as 4-5 manage this easily. King's Palace Tour suits kids 8+. Natural Entrance Trail suits kids 10+ who are comfortable hiking downhill. Lower Cave has a 12-year minimum.

Can I combine multiple tours in one day?

Yes, except Lower Cave cannot be combined with King's Palace on the same day. You can do Big Room and King's Palace together, or Big Room and Natural Entrance. Factor in 2-3 hours per tour plus cave access time.

What should I wear?

Closed-toe hiking boots or shoes with good tread for all tours. Lower Cave requires specific aggressive-tread boots—no sandals or tennis shoes. Layers are essential since cave temperature is always 56°F but surface heat is typically 80–100°F in summer.
