Day 1: Big Room, Natural Entrance & Bat Flight
Stay: Stay in Whites City (7 miles from visitor center) for on-park lodging, or Carlsbad town (20 miles) for more dining and hotel variety.
This single-day arc covers Carlsbad's signature experiences—the illuminated Big Room and the famous evening bat emergence—leaving you with concrete understanding of the cavern's scale and resident wildlife.
- Start with a 9:30 am timed-entry reservation to explore the Big Room Trail, a 1.25-mile well-lit path winding through the 8.2-acre cavern chamber beneath 200-foot ceilings.
- Afterward, hike the steep 1.25-mile Natural Entrance Trail, descending 750 feet of switchbacks through a gaping sinkhole entrance that was the only access before elevators arrived in the 1930s.
- Return to the Bat Flight Amphitheater at the Natural Entrance for the evening ranger talk and free bat flight program, where approximately 400,000 Brazilian free-tailed bats emerge into the desert twilight.
Common Questions
Can I visit Carlsbad Caverns without a reservation?
No. Timed-entry reservations are mandatory to select your entry time slot. Book at recreation.gov or call 877-444-6777 up to 30 days in advance. Walk-ups are not permitted; same-day reservations close at 5:00 am MT.
How much time do I need for a complete cavern visit?
Plan 4–6 hours total: 1.5 hours for the Big Room Trail, 2–3 hours for the Natural Entrance hike (round-trip with switchbacks), plus visitor center time. If you only do the Big Room, 2.5–3 hours suffices.
What should I wear inside the cavern?
Bring a light jacket even in summer—the cavern stays at 56°F year-round. Wear closed-toe hiking boots or shoes with good traction and lug soles; many sections are wet and slippery. Avoid sandals, flip-flops, and smooth-soled shoes.
Is the bat flight program available year-round?
No. The Bat Flight Program runs May 30–October 31 and is free with no reservation needed. Seating is first-come, first-served. Best viewing occurs August–September when juvenile bats join the populations. The program occurs at sunset, around 7:30 pm in May (later as summer progresses).
Can I bring food and water into the cavern?
Plain water is allowed, but no food, gum, candy, tobacco, or vaping products are permitted inside. The visitor center cafeteria serves drinks and snacks if you need fuel before entering.
