Canyonlands for Families: A 2-Day Weekend Itinerary
Explore arches and river-carved overlooks across two scenic days in Utah's high desert.
Canyonlands National Park sprawls across southeast Utah's high desert, where the Green and Colorado Rivers carve a labyrinth of crimson canyons, towering buttes, and stone fins. This 337,598-acre wilderness divides into four remote districts, each with its own character and road access.

- Miles of trails
- Vehicle entry fee
- Open 24 hours daily

Day : Arch Views and Overlook Sunsets
Stay: Check in at your Moab hotel. Best Western Plus Canyonlands Inn offers breakfast for tomorrow's early start.
Mesa Arch delivers the park's most iconic view; Whale Rock scramble and overlooks complete a full introduction to Island in the Sky in one afternoon.
- Arrive in Moab by mid-morning and drive 32 miles to Island in the Sky Visitor Center.
- Fuel at the park's vehicle entrance (no services beyond this point).
- Start with Mesa Arch, a 30-minute walk to a 27-foot arch perched at a cliff edge framing the La Sal Mountains.
- Loop counterclockwise to minimize elevation early.
- Detour to Whale Rock, a short scramble up sandstone for mesa-top views.
- Finish your drive at Green River Overlook for sunset (1,300 feet above the river) or Grand View Point for panoramic canyonland vistas.

Day : Upheaval Dome & River Panorama
Stay: Optional third night in Moab for extra recovery, or depart for home after final sunset.
Upheaval Dome's mysterious one-mile crater—possibly meteorite impact or salt-dome collapse—rewards a steep but short hike; Grand View Point's 360° vista across mesas and canyons provides the perfect trip finale.
- Return to Island in the Sky and head north to Upheaval Dome.
- The first overlook is a 0.6-mile roundtrip with 115 feet of gain; a short, steep climb rewards you with views into the dome's concentric rings and surrounding canyon bench.
- The second overlook (1.2 miles roundtrip, 114 feet gain) extends the view northward.
- Refuel and hydrate at the visitor center, then drive south to Grand View Point.
- The 1.8-mile mesa-top trail climbs gently 73 feet to the southernmost point of Island in the Sky, overlooking corrugated canyons, the White Rim four-wheel-drive road, The Maze, and The Needles in the distance.
- End with sunset if light permits.
