East Side vs. West Side of Glacier National Park: Which Should You Visit?

Two sides of one park deliver very different trips. Here is how to choose the right Glacier base.

Which Side Should You Visit?

East for adventure; west for convenience

East Side

The stronger choice for big hiking days, open mountain scenery, and dedicated park time.

West Side

The practical choice for easy arrival, Lake McDonald, shorter walks, and flexible backup plans.

The east side includes St. Mary, Many Glacier, and Two Medicine. The west side includes West Glacier, Apgar, Lake McDonald, Avalanche, and the west approach to Logan Pass. Your best base depends more on daily priorities than on a blanket ranking.

Do not judge drive time by straight-line distance. Mountain roads, entrance delays, wildlife, construction, and stops can make cross-park travel much slower.

For Hiking

Winner: East Side

Alpine scenery along Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park
East Side

Many Glacier and the east-side valleys support full days built around major trailheads.

West Side

Excellent access to Avalanche, Lake McDonald, and the west approach to Logan Pass, with more short-walk options.

For Families and First-Time Visitors

Winner: West Side

East Side

Rewarding for active families that can plan around longer drives, weather, and fewer services.

West Side

Apgar and Lake McDonald combine lake access, rentals, short walks, food, and visitor information in a compact area.

The west side is usually easier when a group includes different fitness levels or when plans must change quickly. The Flathead Valley also gives visitors more options outside the park when smoke, storms, congestion, or fatigue changes the day.

For Wildlife and Open Scenery

Winner: East Side

East Side

Open valleys provide broad views and strong wildlife habitat, especially around dawn and dusk.

West Side

Forest, lake, and river environments create a greener, more enclosed landscape.

For Arrival and Services

Winner: West Side

East Side

Works best when the trip is deliberately based near St. Mary, Many Glacier, or Two Medicine.

West Side

Closer to Glacier Park International Airport and the larger service network in Columbia Falls, Whitefish, and Kalispell.

West-side convenience is not just about the airport. It means more lodging choices, groceries, restaurants, and non-park alternatives. That flexibility can be more valuable than saving a few miles on one scenic drive.

For a Four-Night or Longer Trip

Best plan: Split the stay

West Nights

Use for arrival, Lake McDonald, Avalanche, and the west approach to the alpine road.

East Nights

Use for St. Mary, Many Glacier, Two Medicine, and early trail starts.

Two nights west and two nights east is a practical starting point. Add the extra night to the side containing the trip’s highest-priority hike or activity. Before the alpine road opens, treat the two sides as separate destinations connected around the park by US 2.

Glacier does not require vehicle reservations anywhere in the park in 2026. From July 1 through September 7, private-vehicle parking at Logan Pass is limited to three hours. The 2026 Logan Pass shuttle uses dated tickets with assigned boarding locations and times. Congestion may still cause temporary diversions. Source

Two Medicine Campground is closed for the 2026 season because of construction. That does not mean the entire Two Medicine district is closed.

Common Questions

Can I visit both sides in one day?

You can cross the park when Going-to-the-Sun Road is fully open, but a one-day visit is usually better when focused on one corridor. Stops, parking, wildlife, construction, and weather make the drive longer than the map suggests.

Which side is better if Going-to-the-Sun Road is closed?

Choose based on the district you most want to experience and approach it from outside the park. Do not assume that a road closure near Logan Pass closes every lower-elevation area.

Which side is better for a first visit?

West is easier logistically. East is stronger for visitors whose main goals are hiking and alpine scenery. With four or more nights, split the stay.
