About This Attraction

Dark, sheer canyon walls loom above the Gunnison River. The base exposes Precambrian metamorphic and igneous rocks, with younger sedimentary layers above. Over millions of years, water erosion deepened the gorge as uplift lifted the plateau, carving this world-class incision.
