Overview

About This Attraction

Steam shrouds the white mineral plain of Porcelain Basin, while Back Basin vents hiss in the distance. This is a hydrothermal basin born of Yellowstone's active caldera plumbing, where a shallow magma chamber drives boiling springs and acid-altered rock colors. The 2.5-mile boardwalk loop threads between the basins, offering close-up views of one of Yellowstone's hottest and most dynamic thermal areas.

Best Time to Visit

Late spring (May–June) and early fall (September–October) offer lower crowds; morning light best for illuminating steam and color; avoid midday in summer due to glare and crowds.

Visitor Tips

  • Arrive early to grab a parking spot. Norris Geyser Basin’s lot holds 143 spaces, including 17 for oversize vehicles, and it fills up quickly in peak season. If it’s full, overflow parking may be found along Grand Loop Road.
  • Stay on the designated boardwalks and trails. The ground around boiling pools and vents is extremely hot and thin; stepping off can cause severe burns and damage the delicate crust.
  • Dress for variable weather and rugged footing. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes, bring water, and layer clothing for spring through fall; a hat and sunscreen are smart on bright days.
  • Map out the loops. The Porcelain Basin loop is about 0.75 miles (1.2 km); the Back Basin loop is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km). If you walk both, plan on roughly 3 miles (4.8 km) of hiking.
  • Wildlife awareness. Bear spray is a prudent precaution; travel with a companion if possible and keep a safe distance from wildlife. Never approach geysers or disturb the ground.
  • Stay connected offline. Cell service is spotty in this area—download offline maps before you go so you can navigate without data.
