Indiana Dunes Itinerary: 1, 3 & 5 Days, Built in Order

Serene landscape of sand dunes overlooking Lake Michigan under a clear blue sky.

Indiana Dunes National Park

Pick your days. The park is built in order.

Day 1 is the one-day plan. Every extra day adds the next corner of Indiana Dunes in our listings, so a 3-day trip is days 1 to 3 and a 5-day trip is all five. Nothing here is padding.

This itinerary starts on the lakefront because that's where Indiana Dunes' best-known named stops sit in our listings: West Beach, Dune Ridge Trail, the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, and Mt. Baldy Beach Trail. A one-day visit stays there. Add a second and third day and the plan moves inland to the marsh and bog trails and the Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm corner, the park's cluster of trails built around water and history rather than the shoreline.

Days four and five go quieter and farther still: the inland dune and prairie trails around Glenwood, Tolleston, and Hobart Prairie Grove, then a fifth day built around the water route and the park's own named challenge trails for hikers who want to string routes together into a longer day. None of the writing here comes from a past visit or an old article; the sequence follows what the park's own trail and beach listings suggest about where things sit.

Day 1 Lakefront and beach trails

One day in Indiana Dunes National Park: lakefront and dunes

This day strings together the park's own lakefront and beach listings in sequence, not a single write-up.

Dynamic waves crashing on the sandy beach of Indiana Dunes under a clear blue sky.
  • 5 stopslakefront trail and beach stops
  • beach + duneday 1 terrain
  • tier 1the one-day plan

Start at West Beach Trails, the park's main lakefront and beach stop in our listings, then walk the short Dune Ridge Trail nearby.

From there follow the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk's beach and paved trail, a separate stretch of shoreline named directly in the park's own listings.

Close the day at Mt. Baldy Beach Trail, the day's other named beach-and-dune stop, saved for last because it's the most distinct single feature in the lakefront group.

With kids: Beach walking at West Beach and the Portage Lakefront is the easiest stretch of this day for kids; treat the dune climb at Mt. Baldy as optional.

Day 2 Marsh, bog, and woods

Day 2: marsh, bog, and Miller Woods

Away from the shoreline, the park's marsh, bog, and woods trails group into their own corner of the day.

A wooden boardwalk stretches through a lush marshland, capturing the essence of nature's tranquility.
  • 5 stopsmarsh, bog and woods stops
  • 2 pairsGreat Marsh N/S, Cowles Bog N/S
  • tier 3the 3-day plan

Day 2 moves off the beach into the park's marsh and bog trails: Great Marsh Trail North and South, then Cowles Bog Trail North and South, four separate legs named as pairs in the listings.

Finish at the Paul H. Douglas Trail through Miller Woods, the day's one wooded stop, named for its own route through Miller Woods rather than a beach or marsh.

With kids: There's no difficulty rating in our listings for the marsh and bog trails, so check current trail conditions before bringing young kids on this day.

Day 3 Homestead, farm, and upland

Day 3: the Bailly Homestead and upland corner

The homestead and upland stops round out the inland side of a three-day visit.

  • 4 stopshomestead and upland stops
  • 1 clusterBailly Homestead + Chellberg Farm
  • tier 3the 3-day plan

Day 3 is the historic and upland corner: the Bailly Homestead, Chellberg Farm, Little Calumet River, and Mnoké Prairie Trails are grouped together under one listing, so treat that stop as a cluster rather than a single point.

Add the Upland Trail and the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk Pavilion, then close with Calumet Dunes Trail, a dune trail distinct from the Glenwood and Tolleston dune trails saved for Day 4.

With kids: The Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm cluster is the day's most kid-friendly stop by name alone; save the Upland Trail for older legs.

Day 4 Inland dunes and prairie

Day 4: inland dunes and prairie

The dune and prairie trails farther from the lake make a quieter, longer fourth day.

  • 5 stopsinland dune and prairie stops
  • 2 pairsGlenwood Main/Alt, Hobart E/W
  • tier 5the 5-day plan

Day 4 goes inland and quieter: Glenwood Dunes Trail has a Main and an Alternate route, both named in the listings, followed by Tolleston Dunes Trail.

Finish with the Hobart Prairie Grove Trail's East and West legs, the farthest-inland pair of stops in this plan and the least beach-like corner of the park in our data.

With kids: This is the day's longest inland stretch with no difficulty data in our listings, so it suits older kids and adults more than a young family.

Day 5 Water and challenge routes

Day 5: paddling and the park's challenge routes

A flexible day built around the water route and the park's own named challenge trails.

  • 6 stopswater and challenge routes
  • 1 paddle routeLake Michigan and waterways
  • tier 5the 5-day plan

Day 5 is built around water and flexibility: Paddling Lake Michigan and Waterways at Indiana Dunes is the park's dedicated paddling route in our listings.

The rest of the day is a pick-your-length menu straight from the park's own named routes: One Hour Excursions, Half Day Adventures, Full Day Expeditions, the Diana Dunes Dare, and the 1966 Hiking Challenge. Pick one instead of trying to string all five together.

With kids: Let kids pick the shortest named route, One Hour Excursions, rather than committing the family to a longer challenge trail.

Before you go

Dates and rules below are drawn from the official sources listed at the end of the page.

Questions people ask before a Glacier trip

Is one day enough for Indiana Dunes National Park?

One day covers the park's lakefront trails and beaches in our listings: West Beach, Dune Ridge Trail, the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk, and Mt. Baldy Beach Trail. That's Day 1 above.

How many days do you need at Indiana Dunes?

Three days adds the marsh and bog trails plus the historic Bailly Homestead and Chellberg Farm corner. Five days adds the inland dune and prairie trails plus a day built around paddling and the park's named challenge routes.

Can you paddle at Indiana Dunes National Park?

Yes — the park lists a dedicated route, Paddling Lake Michigan and Waterways at Indiana Dunes, covered on Day 5 above.

What are the 1966 Hiking Challenge, the Diana Dunes Dare, and the Full Day, Half Day, and One Hour routes?

These are named routes in the park's own trail listings, grouped by how much time they take rather than by location. They're grouped into the flexible fifth day of this plan.

Is there a campground or lodging inside Indiana Dunes covered here?

Not in this plan — our listing data for this park is trail and beach pages only, with no lodging or campground listing yet. Check the NPS site for current camping options before you go.

Which trail is the best starting point for a first visit?

West Beach Trails and Dune Ridge Trail open Day 1 above because they're the park's most central, lakefront-facing stops in our listings.

This plan is sequenced from Indiana Dunes' own trail and beach listings on this site, not from a personal visit or a published guide; the park has no first-person write-up in our archive yet, so treat the routing as a starting sequence and confirm current conditions with the National Park Service before you go.
